Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are the surgical specialists in the dental field. Their surgical expertise and knowledge give them the unique ability to diagnose and treat various conditions, defects, and injuries of the mouth, jaw, and face.

Training

After completing four years of dental school, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons continue their education for at least four more years in a hospital-based surgical residency program. Their residency includes rotations in anesthesiology, internal medicine, neurosurgery, general surgery, critical and intensive care, otolaryngology, and plastic surgery.

Within a few years after completing their residency program, most Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons undergo rigorous written and oral examination to earn their board certification. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons have extensive and thorough training in anesthesia, tooth extraction, dental implants, facial cosmetics, bone grafting, and the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
